- Agile Teams
Scaling agile means both tactical scalability and strategic scalability, as we can see from SAFe®. While tactical alignment is about getting more people to work together, strategic alignment is about aligning the Business Vision and the execution. Agile is being expanded by SAFe® in both cases. We still need agile teams to scale at the atom level, and that is why we use a scaled agile framework specifically for building agile teams.
- Introducing Agile Release Trains
It can be considered an agile release train if it is composed of 5 to 12 agile teams. They have a collaborative leadership group and are aligned with the program backlog called the Program Backlog. In contrast to projects where you may start with an idea and form a team around you, Agile Release Train (ART) is made up of agile teams. The agile teams in SAFe® are long-lived, so new initiatives are taken whenever the need arises.
- Iterations And Program Increments
SAFe® has two-time boxes, one of which is pretty long, and one of which is pretty short.
We generally use a timebox of 10 weeks as the default; PI is the long timeframe, and it can last for up to 12 weeks. Iteration refers to the shorter timeframe of two weeks. In terms of the full agile release train, we have a ten-week learning cycle for the team-level work and a two-week learning cycle for team-level work.
- Team Backlog
Every Agile team has a local backlog with all the items they are expected to work on. The team backlog is made up of two types of items, Stories and Enablers. Product Owners work closely with agile teams to refine the backlog and prioritize it.
- Planning Meeting For Program Increments (PI)
The process of planning PIs is simple: we use the program backlog as an agile release train and pull the work that needs to be done within a PI. By doing so, we can develop an integrated plan that takes into account dependencies. We can also ensure a good match between capacity and demand.
